4x4 engine oil pan same as 2wd?
Hi gang, some background info... I drive a 1994 ranger extended cab 4x4 with 3.0 v6 and man trans. A few years back a head gasket blew out and hydraulically locked the engine.
A buddy had a 1993 2wd ranger with the 3.0 v6 that a tree fell on years ago. engine had 60k on it. I bought it and put it in.
Fast forward and the oil pan started leaking. A hole wore in it from the frame or axle...? SO I ordered a pan online. it is different from the old one as it looks to have indentations just where the hole is worn through the old pan.
SO I conclude the 2wd and 4x4 pans are different. BUT WHEN I GO TO INSTALL IT IT WONT SET DOWN AGAINST THE BLOCK! I can see where the oil pick up hits the inside of pan on one of the indentations.
So the oil pumps must be different between the 4x4 and 2wd models as well? I can't find an oil pump listed anywhere that lists 2 pumps. just one part. AND when I look up oil pans all I find is the type I have WHICH I believe is the correct one for the 4x4.
However, if I buy the oil pump and pan it won't fit, I would wager. Any one out there dealt with this?
And while I have the engine on the engine stand anyone got any tips on how to draw more power out of these things I would love to hear them.
Long winded post I know but Thanks in advance for any thoughts...Jeff.

Thanks for responding Ron... that is exactly the results I have found as well. I am almost to the point of taking the oil pump off and cutting the braze weld used to secure the pick up tube, removing it and cutting out about an inheritance or so to shorten the horizontal length and that may allow the pick up to clear the pan. The wife says just put a 2wd pan on and replace it every few years. UMM NO.

If the old pan has the drain plug on the side, it's probably a Taurus pan. Rangers have the drain plug at the back of the pan. If the new one doesn't have the oil level sensor hole, it's probably for a 95+ 3.0. The correct pan for the truck should be this one below.

What's confusing is that the new pan is hitting the oil pump. But I don't know just how different the 1995+ pans are from a 93-94 pan.
