#2 Cylinder Mystery Misfire
Hey everyone, thanks for checking out my post
I have a 1999 v6 3.0L XLT Normal Fuel Automatic Ford Ranger with a #2 Cylinder Misfire. It is the only code that is coupled with a rough idle. The rough idle started right before the code was thrown, with a smooth history of running fine.
I have replaced
Spark plugs & Wires
#2 Fuel Injector
Fuel Filter
Ignition Coil
I have Cleaned and inspected
MAF sensor
EGR Valve
I have Conducted
Compression test - about #160 all around
Block test three times and passed
Vacuum test with starter fluid everywhere with no change
Check for any tubes out of place
The truck starts fine, and then immediately starts running rough at idle, which feels like a constant misfire. As soon as I give it some gas or get above around 2000 RPM the engine runs fine. Highway speeds seem to run well until I get around 50-60 MPH, and the automatic transmission shifts down, and it feels like it starts misfiring again. There is an audible click in the new fuel injector, and I have also pulled the valve cover and everything looks in place. I added fuel and Oil treatment which hasn’t done anything to change how the engine runs. I don’t know where or what to check next, any help would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time

I have a similar issue with a 2005 Edge. 135,000 miles and ten days ago it started missing, mostly under acceleration, but I do hear odd popping sounds in the AM radio corrosponding with the missing. I get the number two misfire (P0302 I believe) as well as P0316 (multiple misfire on startup).
I put new plugs and wires in, which it needed badly. But I get the same codes. Oddly, it runs wonderful from 2000 to 3000 rpm.
The popping in the AM radio that happens when it misses tells me I have an ignition problem. (Well, unless the injector is doing that, but the injectors run on 12v, the plugs are THOUSANDS of times that voltage, I really think I have some odd ignition issue. I am wondering of a bad crank or cam sensor might be capable of confusing the engine controller and causing it to loose it's place, but it would seem I'd have more than just a no 2 misfire.
If I ever figure it out, I will come back and spill the beans.
(NOTE: I was a member here for a long time, somehow lost my login and frankly, the truck went seven years with no issue at all.)
