1994 3.0L Broken Timing Cover Bolt
After hours of reading through this forum and watching Youtube videos, I began tackling the dreaded leaking timing cover gasket job. I got to within one bolt of replacing the gasket and putting everything back together. Ugh....
The problem bolt is on the driver's side and passes through both the water pump and the timing chain cover before entering the block. It has a 13mm head and is approximately 3" long. See photos...
As you can see in the third photo, about 1/4" of the bolt is protruding through the timing cover, I've tried unsuccessfully gripping it with vice grips. The other similar 3" bolts that I successfully removed were all fairly difficult/stiff, and once completely out, the bolt threads were caked full of sealant from the factory (I've owned the truck since new). I'm now contemplating what my next move should be. I spent most of this afternoon removing the AC compressor and power steering pump and bracket just to have more room to work with. I'm thinking that, since the timing cover hole that this bolt passes through is not threaded, that I might be able to pry the timing cover off over the broken bolt. If I could do that then I would have a good amount (over an inch) of the bolt left protruding from the block...and might just be successful with the vice grips getting it out at that point.
Any and all ideas are greatly appreciated...somewhat discouraging to get to this point and run into trouble.
