Trying to revert to OEM a ranger 1995 2.3L (wiring questions)
Hello, I've been looking around this and other forums but I haven't found the answers I'm looking for. I recently got for very cheap a ranger 2.3L . 95' to do some work in the house, and it had so many electrical components directly connected to power and weird switches even though the truck ran. Ive been using the wiring diagrams to revert all this crap, with successful results and also doing a lot of maintenance work so it runs as good as it can. Now, I'm a bit stuck on 3 things:
-The truck has 2 oxygen sensors. I got both new, the downstream got it on and connected but the upstream one that you can reach from the engine bay very close to the firewall, it doesn't have the plug that connects the sensor the the main harness. I've looked so many times, and cannot for the life of me find it. Where does that plug connect to the main harness? Or can somebody take a picture?
-Regarding the GEM, It has a wire spliced, black with red stripe. I wasn't able to find it on the wiring diagram, and I got the Speedo and temp gauge not working. Maybe they are not related (already change the Temp sensor, speed sensor and abs sensor, so its probably the cluster) but I want to know what is that wire for. Maybe itll give me some idea why the previous owner spliced it. My GEM has only 2 plugs (1 on the side, 1 under) since its the single cab, manual windows model.
-I want to know what are 3 relays in a small box near the passenger headlight, pretty hidden. If someone can tell me what each one does it would be great, I couldn't find that particular electrical box in the diagrams.
Thanks in advance and happy weekend!

Welcome to the forum
On fuel injected engines there are TWO coolant temp devices
ECT sensor, 5volt, always 2 wires, only used by the computer for choke mode and fuel mix
ECT Sender, 12volt, 1 wire(usually) only used by dash board temp gauge
Red/white wire is for dash temp gauge sender, it uses its threads as its Ground so don't add tape to these
On the 2.3l the temp sender was on drivers side of engine at the back below oil pressure sender, but Ford moved it to the front of the engine in the mid-1990s so not sure on the 1995 2.3l
On the GEM there is a Black/pink stripe wire that has power in ACC and RUN so someone may have tapped that wire for radio or "accessory"
I think that's Relay Box #2, should have wiper, washer and head light relays but couldn't find a map for it
The upstream O2 sensor plug will be part of the main harness and if you ordered the O2 for 1995 2.3l then the length of the lead coming off the O2 should give a general search area, the part number difference for O2 sensors is the length of the lead wire, all O2 sensors are the same internally, well until wide band O2s came out, lol
1995 still used gear driven VSS sensor on the transmission tail shaft for Speed signal, so its signal runs directly to speedometer, cruise, computer and GEM, via spliced wires
Rear axle ABS sensor was only used for Speed signal in 1998-2000 Rangers, just FYI
VSS sensors generates its own AC Voltage
One of the VSS wires is a Ground, so only half the AC signal is used
The other wire is the speed signal, so only 1 wire is needed at the devices since they are already grounded
Did you check the gear on the VSS, did it look OK
You can use a drill to spin the VSS shaft to test for signal at speedometer, can't remember which way to spin it?
Does not hurt it spin it the wrong way, you do that every time you back up, lol, but just won't show speed
