Welcome to the forum
No, not really any other automatic transmissions, and certainly not better ones
Your current 4R44E was used from 1985 thru 2011 in Ranger and other Ford models, so 26 years, one of the better and longer lasting Ford automatics
It was called the A4LD from 1985 to 1994, and used 1 or 2 solenoids
Then from 1995 to 2000 it was called the 4R44E or 55E and had 6 solenoids(so same trans with different valve body)
Then called 5R44E or 55E from 2001-2011 because of added software to computer control, same 6 solenoids
Most of the time the problem is from mistakes in rebuilding these transmissions
Rebuilders often just replace soft parts, bands and clutches, this pretty much guaranties trans failure in 18 to 24 months, rebuilder blames design, lol, used for 26 years, yes must be bad design, Ford is just stupid and ignored problems
Anyway, rebuild must include new pump, new sprags, and new OD drum, and its good for another 300k miles, well 250k at least, lol
Your 1995 needs the VSS sensor on the tail shaft, but good news is the the gear on the output shaft was there up thru 2000 and the 2.5l Lima engine
So if you are not rebuilding yours you can get a used one(roll of the dice) from 1995-2000 2.3l/2.5l Ranger or Mazda B2300/B2500 of same years, 2WD of course
And if 1998 to 2000 swap over your tail shaft housing(with VSS) to replacement transmission
