removing the shift lever

I have searched for an answer to my question without success. I have a 2004 Mazda B2300 which is a 2004 Ranger 2.3L more or less and im in the process of changing my clutch. When I went to remove my shift lever the chiltons manual says to remove the bolt from the base of the shift lever. After pulling everything off I noticed a threaded stud going through the base with a nut on one end. I pulled off the nut and im unable to remove the threaded stud going through the base of the shifter. Does anyone know how to remove the shifter and/or give me some advice on removing it?

Thanks

You take the nut off the side it was on and tighten it on the other side of the shaft. It should pull the shaft right out. You dont tap it out.

Like I said on another site and like what's said above....

Take the nut off the pass side, thread onto driver side. Keep threading til the bolt slides out then just pull up on the shift arm. It's a bolt with a cam on it.

I've never been able to remove it by pounding on the stud with a hammer....I prefer to be able to thread the nut back on it during the install...
