The factory intake flows more air then the head can handle. The problem for our 4 bangers is the restrictive heads. A little porting can do alot, just to much work for a 4cylinder truck.

+1 People don't realize that the air filter on the 2.3L is the same filter used on the 3.0L, and 4.0L. It will flow way more air than a 4.0L will pull, so it's
way over designed for the 2.3L!

See if your truck has an air silencer and just pull it out to get some sound.

The intake for the 4 cylinder is the same for the 3.0 and 4.0 but it is restrictive on the 4.0. When I seafoamed my truck the intake hose collapsed when I reved my engine without a load. Also you don't have to tune your truck for every mod but you will see more gain when you tune for it.
