Hard Shift- no indicator lights.

Hard Shift- no indicator lights.
I recently purchased a 2004 2.4l Ford Ranger 2wd with 112xxx miles on it. The truck is awesome, but just concerned about the harsh shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. The O/D light is not flashing, or the check engine light. Would I be able to just wing it? Or is a problem that may lead to a bigger one? Thanks.

Welcome to the forum
I assume you mean a 2.3l engine
You will have a 5R44E automatic transmission
5R is a 5-speed but actually just a 4-speed.
From 1st the shift is to add OD, then it shifts to 3rd, 4th and OD
So question is, does OverDrive work?
And are ALL the other shifts smooth, so only the shift from 1st to 1st+OD, is harsh?
