2001 Ford Ranger 2.5 manual stuck in gear?
Hey everyone, I'm wondering if my ranger is stuck in gear or is there something else wrong? When I'm starting my truck, once I let off the clutch the truck dies like it's in gear, Neutral position my truck wants to go Forword. No leaks, fluids are good. I just don't know what's wrong. is it worth it to drop the transmission and rebuild it or buy another one?
I changed the bushings already for the shifter on top because there was play in the shifter.
in neutral position or no?
tag on transmission

Welcome to the forum
Not a big deal but you did install the shifter in correctly so will need to pull it out again
Transmission should have been in Neutral BEFORE pulling it out the first time, so it could be re-installed in Neutral
Pull out the shifter again
There are 3 shift rods each with a slot that can be moved forward and back from center(neutral), one at a time, for 5-R, 3-4, 1-2
All 3 must be lined up in the center for Neutral, you can push, one at a time, each one forward and back with a screwdriver to make sure all 3 work
You can even start the engine with shifter out, to make sure you are in Neutral before putting shifter back in, might be some splash up when you let clutch pedal up in Neutral, so put a towel over the shifter hole
It looks to me like all 3 are in Neutral in your picture, but can't be because its stuck in a gear from your description
Once Neutral is confirmed put shifter back in
Its possible one of the shift rods roll pins sheared off so the slot is no longer moving the shift fork inside the transmission, so it can't be taken "out of gear" , in that case yes, transmission would need to be pulled out to repair it
Picture of the 3 shift rods and their forks that slide the dog gears to engage the gears: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/a...1&d=1515364865
You can see the roll pins on the forks and slot for 5-R
Long shot but if you force a shift rod into gear hard enough it can shear off, but not a common failure
