1993 Ranger 2.3L loss of power at lower RPM limp mode
I have a 1993 ranger 2.3L 105k miles with power loss issues in any gear at lower RPM, and a OBD1 code 998 operating in failure mode.
History recently new plugs, new coil packs, new ICM, bad PCM replaced, timing belt and crank sensor replaced, fuel filter new, injectors replaced with rebuilt, egr vacuum replaced, water temp sensor replaced,
I am at a loss i would like any advise.
the codes i am getting are
111-O
10
222-C
224-C
998-O
222-R
222-O

998 does not mean computer issue, it means there is a problem with a sensor or device and the computer is trying to compensate for that, in this case the ICM
222 (M) IDM open or high or right coil pack failure – Ignition Systems
224 (M) Failure in ignition coil primary circuit – Ignition Systems
998 (R) Did not pass Key On Engine Off test yet (Get 111 in KOEO first)
With engine warmed up and idling use a pair of insulated pliers or rubber gloves to pull off the 3 wire connector on one of the coil pack, either one
These engine can run fine on just 4 spark plugs, less power but they ran on 4 spark plugs from 1974 thru 1988 just fine
If engine stalls then the other coil pack is not working, no spark
It it runs but steady misfires then other coil pack is failing or bad spark plugs or wires
Then reverse it, you should shut off the engine first, then plug the coil pack back in, then restart with BOTH coil packs hooked up, then unplug the other coil pack
"New" parts means NEVER EVER TESTED parts, not "tested and works"
So grain of salt with any "new" part
The 222 and 224 codes means you have a spark issue, and not in the computer, it doesn't do spark in 1993, the ICM does
Crank sensor>>>>>ICM>>>>>>>coil packs
No engine computer involved

Hello Ron I have been off line with health issues, i am back in the saddle I went thru all the testing you recommended all codes except 222 are clear now.
I have hooked up a spark tester for the exhaust side coil and all wires and coil tested good, but just as an extra precaution I swapped the coil pack and removed any rust from the mount under the packs still had the same code after clearing and retesting. so plugs Motorcraft are new gapped good, wires NGK new good, and coil pack new and have tested good. I also did a compression test seems fine
I did go ahead and replace the ICM the old one was not grounded, checked the connection at the crank sensor cleaned with contact cleaner and still the same. The crank sensor was also replaced when I did the timing belt and tensioner
I am all ears for any advice or direction you might have

Thread here about code 222 , but he replaced crank sensor to get rid of it, which should have been a different code, lol: https://www.ranger-forums.com/2-3l-2...-222-a-154482/

Hey Ron just wanted to let you know after some wire to wire troubleshooting I ordered another crank sensor this time from NGK and installed, as well as I ended up reinstalling my old ICM and installing a ground wire to the upper left screw. Fixed no more codes
I want to say Thank You for the help it was much appreciated
